You Don’t Need a New Identity — You Need an (Inner) Team Charter

Posted on

Let’s talk about a myth that sneaks into counseling, coaching calls, and self-help books:
You need to change your identity.

Sounds bold, powerful… and kind of overwhelming, right?

But here’s a truth that’s a lot more human, playful, and true-to-brain:
🧠 We are not one fixed identity. We have multiplicity of mind. We have personality parts.
And that’s good news — because now we can see why past efforts to “change identity” have failed. The failure was in assigning singularity. We are neither a fixed, singular personality, nor a fixed singular identity.

Enter: Your Inner Team

Instead of trying to be someone else, what if we gathered the team inside of you — the real one, already active — and helped them align on a shared purpose?

In DiSC DiSCO™, we invite people to notice which parts take center stage in different contexts. The whole case of characters. Maybe your Decisive D part shows up center stage when you are at work, while your Supportive S part handles things at home.

You’re not being fake — it’s a “Put me in coach” moment, where a part can step in and shine. And speaking of shining, when we counsel with DiSC DiSCO™, we help people unobscure their Omniversal Self — the glowing disco ball light. Inner teamwork makes the dream work when led by Omniversal Self.

Counseling with the Inner Team in Mind

Often, people feel stuck because their parts are in a tug-of-war:

  • One part wants to quit the job.
  • Another part wants security and routine.
  • Another wants to write a sci-fi novel in a cabin.

It’s not resistance — it’s a lack of shared vision.

Just like in organizations, your internal team needs a clear charter:
🔹 What’s our shared mission?
🔹 What are our team values?
🔹 How do we handle conflict between parts?
🔹 What does each part need in order to feel seen and supported?

Counseling Questions to Explore Inner Team Identity 💬

These questions are great for journaling, therapy, coaching, or late-night voice memos to yourself. (Be sure to stay within your scope of practice. For example, at Better and Betterer, we help with derailers not disorders.)

1. Who are the key players on your inner team right now?

Give them names, vibes, jobs, styles. For example:

  • The Captain Get-Stuff-Done part (D part)
  • The “I love it!” Big Idea Connector part (i part)
  • The Caring Supporter part (S part)
  • The Quiet Analyst part (C part)
  • ___________ (what other parts do you spot?)

2. What role is each part trying to play? Are any overworked or underused?

3. How do these parts show up to help/”help” you based on physiological (GREEN, YELLOW, RED) states?

(Read about these states here.)

4. What are they afraid will happen if their needs aren’t met?

5. What vision would they all be excited about — even if it’s not perfect?

6. How much is Omniversal Self is shining through?

Take time to connect with Omniversal Self.

7. As guided by Ominversal Self, ask your parts: How do they want to make decisions together?

Do we need:

  • A rotating leadership model?
  • A majority vote?
  • Different team leads in different contexts?
  • Space for consensus?
  • What agreements can all get on board with?

Inner Team Charter Template 📝

Want to make it official? Here’s a basic draft to start with:

INNER TEAM CHARTER
Mission Statement:
We are a team devoted to ________________.

Core Values:
(Each part lists 1-2 values they care about.)

Decision-Making Style:
(How we make tough choices, even when parts disagree.)

Emergency Protocols:
(What we do when a part is in RED zone or hijacks the mic.)

Growth Goals:
(Where we’re heading — short-term and long-term.)

Ways We Celebrate Wins:
(Don’t skip this. Parts love appreciation.)

DiSC DiSCO™ Bonus: Invite Missing Parts to the Party 🎉

If your inner team feels unbalanced, ask:

  • Do we need more D-energy direction?
  • More i-energy spontaneity and hype?
  • More S-energy care and connection?
  • More C-energy clarity and precision?
  • Or… a non-DiSC part who sees the whole fractal pattern?

TLDR; 💡

You don’t need to change your identity.
You just need to get your team on the same page — or at least in the same room.

And your Omniversal Self? It’s already holding the light.
Now cue the music. Your DiSC DiSCO™ is ready.
